6 Underwear Myths the Internet Won't Let Die

The internet has strong opinions about your innerwear. So does your mother. Between WhatsApp forwards, forum debates, and That One Uncle who's convinced he's cracked the code on comfort, men's innerwear has accumulated more myths per square inch than almost any other item in the wardrobe. Some are just funny. Some are costing you actual comfort. Here's what's true, what's not, and what nobody bothered to fact-check before hitting forward.

Myth #1: Superman wears his underwear on the outside because that's just what superheroes do

The reality: It's a costume choice from the 1930s, not a fashion recommendation. Superman's creators were riffing on circus strongman outfits – tights plus trunks worn over them were standard strongman aesthetic, meant to show off muscle definition on stage. It had nothing to do with function and everything to do with looking impressive under spotlights. Your daily comfort doesn't need a cape or an audience; it just needs a non-digging waistband that stays where you put it.

Myth #2: If there's no tag, it's a cheaper product

The reality: Not necessarily. Tag-free construction doesn’t automatically mean a product is more expensive or higher quality. It simply means the brand has chosen to remove a potential source of irritation. Whether an innerwear product is good or not comes down to the fabric, fit, construction and overall quality—not whether it has a tag.

Myth #3: Sizing up gives you more comfort

The reality: Bigger doesn’t automatically mean more comfortable. How an innerwear garment feels depends on its fit, your body shape, the fabric and its construction. Going a size up may give you more room, but it can also mean extra fabric, bunching or more movement. The goal is to find a fit that feels comfortable and works with the way the garment is designed.

Myth #4: Multipacks are lower quality than buying one expensive pair

The reality: This myth assumes quality and quantity can't coexist, which is a strange thing to assume about anything you replace every single day. A well-made multipack – same fabric, same construction, same waistband tech – just means you're not stretching one pair across a full week of wear. The "one premium pair to rule them all" approach mostly just means you're doing laundry more often.

Myth #5: Bamboo fabric is just a marketing buzzword

The reality: It gets treated like the kombucha of fabrics – trendy-sounding, vaguely suspicious. But bamboo cotton is a real textile category with genuinely different handfeel and breathability characteristics compared to regular cotton – softer weave, better drape, cooler against the skin over a full day. It's not magic. It's just a different raw material doing a different job.

Myth #6: Wearing a specific colour of innerwear brings good luck on exam day or before an interview

The reality: This one's less internet myth, more household folklore – red or yellow innerwear before an exam, a job interview, or Diwali shopping, because someone's chacha swore by it once and it became law. Honestly, it's harmless enough to keep going. Wear the lucky colour. Just make sure it's also the comfortable one.

Most of these myths survive because nobody's ever actually compared the claim to the product in their drawer. Myths don't hold up once the fit does.
